Korean Crabcakes is a broke boyz recipe made with just 4 ingredients, but is super delicious! Ya’ll know that most of my recipes will always be easy and simple without compromising the flavor so here is another one!
In Korea, we call any type of pancake “Jeon”. They are usually any meat, seafood, or vegetable coated in a flour or egg batter and then pan-fried.
This type of food has been in Korean cuisine for a long time. Culturally, meat jeon are served in Royal court feasts, but now, these little pancakes have turned into traditional Chuseok or Korean Thanksgiving Day food. It is a great appetizer, side dish, or munchies with alcohol that the family can enjoy together.
Ingredients for Korean Crab Cake
In this recipe, I only used four ingredients because this is the most basic form of “jeon”. With the foundations I shared, feel free to mix it up according to your preference. Turn any meat, seafood, or vegetable into a munchie!
Imitation Crab
Did you know that imitation crab is actually made with fish? But it is seasoned to taste like crab and the aim is to imitate the texture of crab legs hence it can be easily shredded.
Personally, this is a broke boyz ingredient because it is a common pantry item for us than real crab meat. Imitation Crab is also easy to use in other recipes like White Soobdubu Jjigae, California Roll, Kimbap, Japanese Kani Salad, or Sushi Bake. It is a quick and tasty protein you can use anytime!
Scallion and Carrots
When I was recipe testing, these are the vegetables I find easily available to everyone, make the pancake look pretty with the colors, and altogether make it super tasty too! However, feel free to add other vegetables such as mushrooms, onion, or fishcakes!
My only tip when adding vegetables is to make sure you chop them really small so that they can be mixed thoroughly.
Egg
To make the “jeon” or to turn it into a pancake, we are going to use eggs. For the amount of ingredients specified in the recipe card, two eggs are sufficient to allow it to come together. If you will add more ingredients, add more egg, otherwise it will fall apart.
Unlike other Korean pancakes such as Kimchi Pancake, Chive Pancake, or Vegetable Pancake, we do not need to use flour since the eggs are directly added to it.
How to Make Crabcake Jeon?
Making this dish is straightforward. You just need to mince all the ingredients, combine them in a bowl, season with salt and white pepper, and mix well so the egg coats everything.
To cook, you only need a spoonful per piece of pancake and pan-fry it with a little bit of oil on medium heat. Once the bottom has set, flip the pancake. Watch out that it is not toasted nor burnt. We want it just bright yellow in color.
Serving Korean Crabcake
There are many ways to serve these little pancakes. As mentioned, it can be served as an appetizer or snack during Thanksgiving or as an offering to passed-away ancestors. It can also be added as a side dish in your bento box or enjoyed with some drinks, if you know what I mean??
If you season this well, there will be no need for dipping sauce, however, feel free to use soy sauce or ketchup to enjoy this even more!
