This Broke Boyz Hangover Soup is my go-to every after a night of drinking. It always hits the spot and helps me regain my energy!Β
Soju, an alcoholic beverage that is common in Korea, is the best drink to pair with Korean BBQ. It is cheap, widely available, and because of its high alcohol contentβit can easily give you the buzz.
Drinking is a big part of Korean culture. An invitation to eat and drink together is often seen as a compliment because when you drink, you open up more, and it develops stronger relationships. Whether itβs with family, friends, or business, drinking is a must!
While it is common for us to drink and we generally have a high tolerance, it doesnβt mean we are spared from hangovers. To cure this, oftentimes people look for grilled cheese, bacon and eggs, soup, caffeine, or sports drinks. The main point is, they want something hot, salty, or greasy to get over that heavy feeling.Β
Personally, I like to have something spicy, refreshing, and ultimately filling. While there are a lot of varieties of Korean hangover soups or haejangguk, this broke boyz hangover ramen is one of my favorites!

Instant Ramen
This is a broke boyz recipe because we are going to use instant ramen. Itβs very cheap but it already has a delicious, salty soup base and noodles.
You might be wondering, is it ok to eat ramen after drinking alcohol? Its salt content will help hydrate the body as you recover from a hangover, and the carbs will fill you up well!
Beansprouts
Beansprouts are very common in a Korean pantry because they are widely available all year round and it is very nutritious. Aside from the vitamins you get from this vegetable, it also helps boost your liver function so that you can easily detox. As you boil it, it will add a refreshing taste to the soup. When you eat it, it will bring a nice crunch to your meal.
While there are other varieties of hangover soup like Dried Pollock Soup, Spicy Hangover Soup, or Kongnamul Guk, its common denominator will always be beansprouts.
Garlic and Scallions
These are additional aromatics that I like to add to my instant ramen because they just elevate its taste!
Gochugaru and Black Pepper
Personally, I like a super spicy soup to cure my hangover so I added more Korean red pepper flakes to heat up my soup even more. Black pepper on the other hand will bring both spice and contrast to the saltiness! Feel free to add more or less of these depending on your spice tolerance.Β
Soy Sauce for Soup
This is optional, but soup soy sauce just adds more flavor to the soup. My wife suggested it, and I really liked how it turned out! The saltier the soup, the more rehydrated I feel as I recover.Β
How to Make Hangover Ramen?
To make this, saute the garlic, scallions, gochugaru, and soup packet first. By doing this, you are combining all the flavors and the spice comes out even more. This sets you up for a very nice and tasty soup base.
Following that, add water, bring it to a boil, then add the beansprouts and vegetable packet. The beansprouts will add a refreshing taste to the soup. It should be evident as you taste it.
TIP: If you want a richer soup, feel free to use beef broth instead of water!
You can now add the noodles and cook them according to your preference. Let the noodles breathe a few times to make it chewier! Serve by adding soy sauce and topping it with scallions. Make sure to eat this right away and finish everything! The noodles donβt do well when refrigerated.
I know I said this is a broke boyz recipe, so this is optional. To make this a fuller meal, I cooked up some chadol baegi or thinly sliced rib eye because it just fits so well! Feel free to use other types of protein like pork belly, depending on whatβs available to you.
Now you have all your bases covered from carbs, to protein, to hot, refreshing, and salty soup! After this, youβll feel like a new person for sure!Β
