- Firm Tofu – You need either firm tofu or extra-firm tofu so that it crumbles nicely, leaving you with the texture of minced meat. When you buy, make sure to get a fresh batch to ensure it doesn’t have a funky smell. Tofu, in general, is bland with a hint of creaminess. However, it will nicely carry whatever flavor you put in it.
- Garlic, Onion, and Scallions – These are the aromatics used to add flavor to the tofu.
- Gochujang or Sriracha – For the savory, tangy spice
- Gochugaru – For additional heat, without making the dish salty
- Oyster Sauce – For the savor and umami
- Sugar or Keto Sugar – This will balance the gochujang and oyster sauce. Feel free to use regular sugar or Keto sugar for fewer calories. Erythritol, monk fruit, stevia, or honey are great options.
- Sesame Oil – This will add earthiness and nutiness, while also complementing the gochujang and oyster sauce.
How to Make Spicy Minced Tofu Bowl?
Prepare the Tofu and Other Ingredients

Remove the tofu from the packaging, then use a paper towel or cheesecloth to squeeze out excess water from it. Do this half a block at a time to make sure more water will be removed. This will allow room for the tofu to slightly crisp up when sautéed. Once it is squeezed, crumble it on a strainer to further remove excess water. Leave to drain.
Meanwhile, prepare the garlic, onion, and scallions by mincing them.
Saute the Tofu

In a pan on high heat, add a bit of oil, then saute the tofu to cook off excess water. Once the water content is reduced, spread the tofu on the pan evenly and leave to toast. When the tofu is slightly browned, flip it in sections to crisp up the other side. Keep it as is until your preferred toastiness is reached.

Make a well in the middle and add oil as needed, then saute onion and scallions in it for 2-3 minutes. Once they are fragrant, mix them with the tofu.
Season the Tofu

Add gochujang, oyster sauce, gochugaru, sugar, and sesame oil to the pan, then mix well until the tofu is well seasoned. Taste and adjust with salt and pepper, and you’re done. If you want a crispier texture, spread the tofu evenly on the pan and leave it to toast until the desired toastiness is reached.
