Updated my Steak Fried Rice Recipe!
Steak Fried Rice is one of my most loved recipes ever since Iβve been making recipe videos. Itβs economical, quick, and super delicious!
This recipe is actually something that I make whenever I get the chance. Seeing it go viral and watching people recreate it makes me so happy because I got to share this simple bowl of joy with them!
I made an updated video on Youtube, go check it out, and letβs get to cooking!
What is leftover steak? I never have leftover steak!
This is the golden question I get from people whenever my recipe video comes up on their feed. Simply put, leftover steak is leftover steak (the filet mignon or rib eye you werenβt able to finish). Whether it’s because youβre full or you cooked way too many steaks, leftover steak is leftover steak.
I don’t suggest that you cook steak just for this. However, if you’ve never had any leftovers, you may need to be a bit intentional on your next steak night because you NEED to try this recipe out!
Leftover steak isnβt really any good, but it doesnβt mean you should throw it out. It also doesnβt mean we canβt turn it into something good!
How to make Steak Fried Rice?

Ingredients
For a single serving, you can simply use garlic, scallions, onion, and eggs. Thatβs it. However, fried rice is literally a dump-and-mix easy meal which means you can put any other leftover vegetables you may have.
For the aromatics, you can add ginger or red onion to make it more fragrant. For the vegetables you can add carrots, asparagus, or frozen mix to make sure your kids get to have a complete meal. Just cut them to bite size and promise they wonβt notice and theyβll enjoy this too!
TIP: Cook scrambled egg first then set aside. Do not mix it with the rice so you donβt make wet fried rice.
Seasoning
I use soy sauce, sesame oil, and oyster sauce to make this super tasty. Soy sauce will give it a good color and umami, and sesame oil will give it a nutty finish. The oyster sauce will boost all these flavors as they come together.Β
TIP: Pour these seasonings on the rice so that it gets absorbed properly and the moisture will also allow the rice to be broken up quickly.
Other tips for making good fried rice:Β
- Use a 1:1 ratio. This means 1 cup of rice to 1 cup of all the toppings combined to make the fried rice. This allows every bite to have all the good stuff!
- The fried rice must be done in 5 minutes. Even if it’s leftovers, we are not going to overcook the steak. Once the steak hits the pan, it should be just go time. All your ingredients should then be prepared beforehand. When it has come together already, don’t keep it in the pan for long.
- Use any type of rice and crumble it up in the pan. While I sometimes prefer using freshly steamed white rice, you can actually use any type of rice in making this. If you ever have a hard time making fried rice because it’s always soggy, use day-old rice. Rice that has been stored in the fridge or freezer has dried up and is perfect for this. Crumble it up in the pan so it gets mixed thoroughly with other ingredients.
- Optional, but you can use a wok. Just make sure to cook it in a pan spacious enough to mix all the ingredients thoroughly.
- Add a tablespoon of butter for a creamy, buttery finish! Complements it perfectly!
- Make your fried rice pretty. Food should not only taste good but also look good. Plate your fried rice beautifully, top it with an egg, and sprinkle in some scallions and sesame seeds! Oooh!
Serve steak fried rice hot and steaming. This is actually perfect the way it is and no other dishes are necessary to come with it. You can, however, have a side of cabbage kimchi or radish kimchi, just like how I do it. For any leftovers, reheat by stir-frying for a couple of minutes. But I doubt you’ll have any leftovers this time, nah mean??

Was that day old rice?
Chef Chris Cho says
I like using freshly cooked rice! But using day old rice is easier to get a well fluffed and drier fried rice.
