Elevate your weeknight dinners with this Dumpling Fried Rice. It’s an easy broke boyz meal, but packed with so much flavor!
This Dumpling Fried Rice was one of my go-to meals when I was a broke boy. Instead of serving mandu steamed, fried, or in a soup, I turned it into a full meal with rice, eggs, and a few seasonings.
Dumplings are perfect for this recipe because they contain meat, aromatics, and seasonings already and they carry over to the rice. As a quick tip, allow the wrapper to crisp up a bit so it has more texture. Simple techniques will make this a meal you’ll surely enjoy!

- Rice – Any type of rice is ok for this recipe, it’s a great way to finish any leftovers you may have. While I prefer freshly cooked rice, day-old rice is also great so you can prevent mushy fried rice.
- Dumplings – Mandu, gyoza, wontons, etc. Use your favorite dumplings for this recipe, simply thaw them out before using them.
- Eggs – For additional protein
- Scallions – The only aromatics we will use to keep it broke boyz but still fragrant and tasty!
- Soy Sauce – To add umami flavor
- Oyster Sauce – For umami flavor that’s not salty, and instead will complement the soy sauce
- Sesame Oil – For a nutty and earthy finish to the fried rice
- Salt and Pepper – To taste
Additional Notes:
If you don’t have soy sauce and oyster sauce, salt and pepper are fine. You can also add chili garlic sauce to make it spicy!
If you want to multiply the dish, make sure that it is 1:1 ratio of rice and dumplings, so for example, 3 cups of rice should also have 3 cups of dumplings.
You can also add vegetables to add more volume and nutrients to the dish. Mushrooms, carrots, corn, broccoli, kimchi, etc. are great options!
How to Make Dumpling Fried Rice?
Prepare the ingredients by thawing out your dumplings and mincing them in a bowl using a pair of scissors, then crumble the rice, and chop up the scallions.
Put oil in a pan, heat it up, and saute the scallions until fragrant. This is what you call pagirum, which will be the base of the fried rice.
Put the chopped dumplings in a pan and saute until you see some browning. This will add both flavor and a bit of texture as the wrapper slightly crisps up.
Put the sauteed dumplings to the side of the pan, place two eggs on the other side, and scramble it until it’s all cooked and dried up. Make sure it has dried up well so the fried rice doesn’t get mushy.
Combine the dumplings and egg and saute it for a couple of minutes, then add the rice. Season with soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil on top of rice, break it up, and mix it all together.
Continue sauteing for a couple of minutes until everything is seasoned thoroughly and the toppings are distributed evenly.
Taste and adjust with salt and pepper. Serve this freshly cooked and enjoy!
Top this with sunny side up eggs, additionally, you can serve this with other dishes like Soy Garlic BBQ Chicken, Soybean Paste Pork Belly, Beef Bulgogi, or other protein dishes and Korean side dishes.
