Spam Fried Rice is a quick and easy meal you will surely add to your weekly rotation! It’s delicious, kid-friendly, and done in one pan under 20 minutes.
This is also one of those dishes that is great on its own or versatile to be switched up according to your preference. It’s super satisfying, but you’ll be surprised how it can be done even on a busy weeknight.
Why Spam?

Many people in my comments section usually dislike it when I use Spam because of a variety of reasons, but this is actually a staple in many Asian countries as a quick, easy, and tasty protein choice that can be used in many ways. Besides fried rice, you can also turn Spam into Kimchi Jjigae, Spam Rice Balls, or Budae Jjigae.
While it can be high in fat and sodium, eating this in moderation and pairing it with vegetables can help make your meals more well-rounded.
Ingredients You’ll Need

- Rice – The best type of rice to use for this recipe is short or medium-grain white rice, but generally speaking, you can also use other types like long grain, brown, or even cauliflower rice. I personally like using freshly cooked rice for a fluffy fried rice, but day-old rice makes this recipe foolproof, as it is already dry and crumbly enough, so it’s easy to mix with other ingredients.
- Spam – What I love about this is the variety of flavors it has. You can easily switch it up so you can satisfy your current cravings—I used Korean BBQ flavor for this recipe!
- Scallions and Onion – These are the aromatics that will add fresh flavors to the fried rice.
- Egg – For additional protein, and fried rice simply tastes good with egg.
- Soy Sauce, Oyster Sauce, Sesame Oil – This is my seasoning trio that makes the fried rice savory and umami-filled.
- Butter – This is my secret ingredient. Butter adds a creamy, velvety finish to the fried rice.
- Salt and Pepper – To taste
- Sunny Side-Up Egg, Scallions, and Sesame Seeds – For garnish
How to Make Spam Fried Rice?

Prepare the ingredients: Chop the onion and scallions, cube the Spam, and scramble the eggs. Set these aside.

Saute the ingredients: Start by adding oil to a pan on high heat, then saute the scallions and onion until fragrant. Add the Spam, then saute until slightly toasted and crispy.

Add in rice & egg: Once the ingredients are mixed well, add rice and season it with soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and butter. Mix this well. Add the scrambled egg, then mix again.

Finish & plate the fried rice: Taste and adjust the fried rice with salt and pepper. Pack fried rice into a bowl, then plate it. Garnish with sunny-side-up egg, scallions, and sesame seeds. Enjoy!
Recipe Notes:
- When sauteing the Spam, it will render oil, so either remove some of it using a paper towel or keep it since this is flavorful. Either way, let it slightly crisp up for better flavor and texture.
- Spam can be a bit oily and salty, but these are flavors that meld well with the rice. My tip is to proportion the rice to the Spam according to your taste when cooking.
- Add the sauce ingredients on top of the rice to break it up easily.
- You can add veggies to bulk up the fried rice with nutrients. You can add frozen mix, carrots, cabbage, bean sprouts, mushrooms, kimchi, seaweeds, etc. This also doubles as helping you clean out your fridge!
- If you want crispy rice, spread out the fried rice throughout the pan and let it sit for 3-5 minutes on medium heat.
Serving and Storage Instructions

You can serve Spam Fried Rice by itself, and it should be a great, filling meal. But you can also serve this with vegetable side dishes like kimchi, cucumber salad, or bokchoy stir-fry. This also goes well with some egg soup, corn soup, or extra protein like dumplings.
For any leftovers, this stores well in the fridge for 3-4 days. Simply reheat by stir-frying in the pan or heating it in the microwave.
